Aim for the area just behind the shoulder, centered vertically. This hits both lungs for quick, humane harvest. Most forgiving shot with largest margin of error.
Wait for broadside shots where the deer is perpendicular to you. This presents the largest vital area and best penetration angle for both bow and rifle.
Excellent shot angle. Aim for the far-side shoulder. Arrow/bullet will pass through vitals diagonally. Better than quartering toward which risks shoulder blade deflection.
Bowhunters: 40 yards maximum for most. Rifle hunters: Know your effective range and practice at that distance. Never take shots beyond your confident range.
If a deer is alert or moving, wait for them to calm and stop. A relaxed deer will react less dramatically to the shot, improving hit placement.
After the shot, watch where the deer goes. Note landmarks and wait 30 minutes minimum before tracking. Rushing can push wounded deer farther.
